Dr. Hussein Salem exemplifies service, leadership, and social responsibility. He is deeply committed to advancing public health dentistry and improving access to care, particularly for underserved populations. As President of the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry’s student chapter of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, he exhibited visionary leadership and strategic thinking. He guided student engagement, fostered collaboration, and strengthened the organization's mission to promote oral health equity. Dr. Salem played a transformational role in leading the student-run free dental clinic, RefugeeOne, a local organization providing resettlement and social services for political refugees and asylum seekers. Under his leadership, the clinic expanded its operations and scope of care to include endodontic and prosthodontic services, which increased both the availability and comprehensiveness of treatment for refugees. He
recruited and coordinated dental faculty, students, and community partners, demonstrating a deep understanding of patient needs and the systemic barriers to care.
Hussein approaches service with compassion and competence, always placing patients at the center of care. He advocates for dignified, culturally sensitive treatment and empowers students to recognize their role in addressing health disparities. He leads with humility, is inspirational, and embraces complex initiatives.
