Contemporary Restorative & 3-D Printable Materials for 2026

Navigating the multitude of options when selecting dental materials in today’s modern dental practice is challenging due to rapid developments and potential improvements in their composition and performance. Understanding some key factors with each class of material and the rationale for their use becomes vitally important. Attendees will critically evaluate the scientific evidence needed to select state of the art dental materials such as universal adhesives, bulk fill restoratives and self-adhesive resin cements (SARC’s). Additionally, a review of the current classification of dental ceramics and 3-D printable materials will be presented. Objectives for this course are:

    • Use scientific evidence to critically evaluate the performance of modern dental materials.
    • Review dental adhesive characteristics with emphasis on universal adhesives.
    • Define bulk fill restoratives and identify reasons for enhanced polymerization depth.
    • Discuss features and a few risks when using self-adhesive resin cements.
    • Introduce the new dental ceramic classification and 3-D printable materials.

Dr. Jon Dossett is Assistant Professor and Team Leader, Team D, Department of Predoctoral Dental Education, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) School of Dentistry. Integrating Digital Dentistry and AI Applications into Daily Clinical Practice

Digital dentistry and artificial intelligence are reshaping the way clinicians diagnose, treatment plan, communicate with patients, and deliver care. This presentation will explore practical applications of intraoral scanning, digital smile design, CAD/CAM technologies, 3D printing, and AI-assisted treatment planning tools that can be incorporated into everyday clinical workflows. Special emphasis will be placed on digital smile design platforms, such as SmileCloud, which leverage facial references and clinician-specific design preferences to create personalized esthetic outcomes. Through clinical cases and real-world examples, attendees will gain insight into how digital technologies can improve efficiency, accuracy, patient engagement, and treatment outcomes. Participants will leave with practical strategies for implementing digital workflows and AI-powered solutions in both private practice and academic environments.

    1. Describe the role of intraoral scanning, digital smile design, CAD/CAM, and 3D printing in contemporary digital dental workflows.
    2. Explain how artificial intelligence can enhance diagnosis, treatment planning, patient communication, and esthetic smile design.
    3. Apply practical strategies for integrating digital dentistry and AI technologies into daily clinical practice to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.

Dr. Carlos Escobar Palma is Director of Digital Dentistry and Clinical Assistant Professor at UT Health San Antonio. He earned his D.D.S. from Universidad Evangélica de El Salvador in 2016 and completed a two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at UT Health San Antonio (2020–2022). An innovative educator and clinician focused on digital dentistry integration, curriculum development, and advanced restorative workflows, he leads digital curriculum across all four dental school years, trains faculty and students in intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM, and 3D printing, and is a recognized international lecturer and clinical mentor.
